Wind turbines of the Cefn Croes wind farm stand very near the summit of Pen y Garn, a 611 m hill topping a 500–600 m plateau in the Cambrian Mountains. Its name means 'head of the cairn', and the top has a very large shelter cairn hollowed from an ancient burial cairn and a trig point, though the highest ground is by a gate. The whole Plynlimon range can be seen about 10 km to the north.
