Sketch of Thomas Pennant

Thomas Pennant

1726Born1798DiedThomas Pennant was born in 1726 at Downing, his family’s estate in Flintshire, and lived there all his life. A naturalist and antiquary, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767. Between 1773 and 1776 he made three journeys through Wales, published as A Tour in Wales; the second, The Journey to Snowdon, took him through Snowdonia, the Llŷn Peninsula and Anglesey. He climbed Snowdon in 1752 and again on his tours, and his books, illustrated by his servant Moses Griffith, were read and quoted by the travellers who came after him. The National Library of Wales calls them the finest travel books of their age in Wales. In his honour, we’ve created the Pennants: all 136 Welsh mountains of 2,000 feet or more with at least 30 metres of drop on every side, the same rule as the Hewitts, used for Wales alone. They run from Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres, to Mynydd Graig Goch at 609.75 metres, from the Carneddau in the north to the Brecon Beacons in the south.
