Ben More Assynt, the 'big mountain of Assynt', is the highest point in Sutherland, and its top is a shattered lump of quartzite. Conival hides it from the road, and the way up crosses quartzite stones and scree, with a sharp arête that's awkward in places. In April 1941 an Avro Anson crashed here, killing all six crew, who were buried on the hill. In 2012 a 600 kg granite memorial was flown in by Chinook to replace their old cairn.
