Cruach Ardrain is a Y-shaped mountain about 5 km south-east of Crianlarich, with a pair of tops about 250 m apart. The north-east one, with the cairn, is the summit, though Munro's Tables switched between the two before settling on it in 1981. The name probably means 'stack of the high stream'. It was on a crossing of this hill to Ben More in May 1892 that William Naismith came up with his famous rule for working out walking times.
