Hands must be used to reach the top of Foel Penolau (614.4 m), reputed to be one of the rockiest summits in Snowdonia. The northernmost summit of the Rhinogydd, it stands 0.4 km from Moel Ysgyfarnogod and overlooks Llyn Trawsfynydd, with Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog in view. A revised survey of its prominence earned it Hewitt and Simms status in December 2018.
