During the Second World War, quarry tunnels in the Manod range secretly stored paintings from the National Gallery in London. Manod Mawr itself (661 m) has been extensively quarried, with the closed Graig Ddu Quarry in the hollow between the summit and Manod Mawr North Top, 1.2 km away. The summit is marked by a boulder with a shelter.
