Just over a kilometre from Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen sits on a short ridge running north-north-west off the main Carneddau ridge, and is usually climbed from there. At 962 m it is the ninth-highest mountain in Snowdonia, its top a rock outcrop, and on a clear day the views run north-west to Bangor and Anglesey. The origin of the name is unclear: it may come from Helen or Eleanor, or from 'gelen', the Welsh for leech.
