Kirk Fell's name comes from the Old English for 'hill above the church', and it rises directly behind the tiny church at Wasdale Head. The direct climb from the village is exceptionally steep, a relentless grass and scree slope where you'll be clutching at the turf. On top there's a large stone windshelter, with old iron fence posts from the Ennerdale Fence crossing the summit, and two small tarns sit in the dip between its two tops.
