Beinn a' Chaorainn means 'mountain of the rowan', though there's hardly a tree on it now. It sits at the head of Glen Derry at the northern end of the Moine Bhealaidh, a high moorland plateau, and drops steeply west into the Lairig an Laoigh pass. The large cairn stands on the higher of two bouldery tops, and the summit takes in all the big Cairngorm hills around it.
