Cairn Gorm is the broad dome that's easy to pick out from Aviemore, and its bare, stony top has a large cairn and an automatic weather station run by Heriot-Watt University. The station recorded a 173 mph gust in 1986, the highest official land wind speed in the UK. Its northern slopes carry a ski area and a funicular railway to the Ptarmigan building. The name, An Càrn Gorm, may mean 'blue cairn' or 'green cairn'.
