Beinn Mhanach, the 'monks' mountain', is said to be named after a monastery that stood below it long ago, though nothing of it survives. It has two rounded summits, with grass on the south side above Loch Lyon and rougher, craggier ground facing Gleann Cailliche to the north. The MacGregors are said to have carried their dead past it from Glen Lyon to their graveyard in Glen Orchy, and the Gaelic poet Duncan Bàn MacIntyre once lived in a cottage nearby.
