Ben Alder is a massive, flat-topped mountain above Loch Ericht, and its wide summit plateau carries a trig point and Lochan a' Garbh Coire, one of the highest pools of standing water in Britain. After the 1745 rising, Cluny MacPherson hid for years in a hideout on its slopes called the Cage, and Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed with him there in September 1746. Robert Louis Stevenson later used the story in Kidnapped.
