Ben Lui is best known for Coire Gaothaich, the great rocky bowl on its north-east face, which often stays icy well into April. Its Gaelic name, Beinn Laoigh, means 'calf mountain'. Five ridges meet at the cairned summit, and the hill sits on Scotland's main watershed, so its streams run to both the North Sea and the Atlantic. A lochan on its slopes has been identified as the source of the River Tay.
