Carn a' Mhaim stands at the entrance to the Lairig Ghru, and one reading of its name is 'hill of the pass'. Its western side falls steeply to the pass, while a narrow ridge about 2 km long links it north to Ben Macdui, often called the only real ridge walk in the Cairngorms. A cairn marks the top, which gives good views of the central Cairngorms, including The Devil's Point and Cairn Toul.
