Carn Eighe is the highest mountain north of the Great Glen, a pointed summit where three ridges meet between Glen Affric and Loch Mullardoch. Its trig point stands inside a stone shelter. When an Ordnance Survey officer reached the top in 1848, he found a pile of stones already there, a sign that someone had climbed it before. The name is often read as 'file peak' or 'notch hill', and it lies more than 10 km from the nearest road.
