Creag a' Mhàim is the eastern end of the South Glen Shiel Ridge, so it's usually the first of seven Munros on the traverse. Its top looks down on the heads of Loch Cluanie and Loch Loyne, and a stalkers' path climbs the eastern shoulder from the old road towards Loch Loyne. It shares the hollow of Coire nan Leac with Druim Shionnach, where stags roar in autumn. The name is thought to mean 'crag of the large rounded hill'.
