Sgorr Dhearg is the higher of the two Munros on Beinn a' Bheithir, the horseshoe of ridges above Ballachulish and Loch Leven. The name Beinn a' Bheithir is given as 'mountain of the beast' or 'of the thunderbolt', and a local legend tells of a dragon that lived in a corrie above Ballachulish and preyed on travellers. Today the summit's high point is an embedded rock, just north of the remains of an old trig point base.
