Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe means 'peak of the black chest' or coffin, possibly after the deep rocky clefts near its top, where the summit has slumped along the Glen Shiel Fault. A large, well-built cairn marks the highest point. In 1719 the Battle of Glen Shiel was fought on its southern slopes, and the nearby top Sgurr nan Spainteach takes its name from the Spanish troops who fought for the Jacobites there.
