In the Fforest Fawr section of the Brecon Beacons, Fan Fawr ('great peak') rises to 734 m. The summit overlooks its steep eastern face, with the highest ground just west-north-west of the cairn, and unusually the trig point sits 600 m away to the south-west on a subsidiary spur. The whole hill is open country, and most walkers head up from the car parks beside the A470 at Storey Arms and Pont ar Daf.
