At the northern end of the main Carneddau ridge, Foel-fras (944.1 m) is the first of the Welsh 3000s reached when doing that walk from the north. Its highest point is a 2 m rock spike about 70 m south-west of the trig point, and the reservoir of Llyn Dulyn lies due south, 400 m below. The summit plateau is one of the best places in Wales to see dotterel on their spring migration.
