Seen from the north, this 698 m peak is often thought to resemble an elephant lying down, hence its colloquial name 'Yr Eliffant'. Mynydd Mawr ('big mountain') overlooks Llyn Cwellyn as the northern outlier of the Moel Hebog group, about 7 km west of Snowdon, and a popular ascent starts from Rhyd Ddu. Remains of ancient settlements and field systems lie on its western flank, and the summit cairn stands just north of a windshelter.
