Midway between the Conwy valley and Penmaenmawr on the coast, Tal y Fan is an outlying peak of the Carneddau and the most northerly 2,000 ft summit in Wales. In 2013 a precise GPS measurement, verified by the Ordnance Survey, confirmed its status as a mountain. Bwlch y Ddeufaen separates it from the main Carneddau ridge, and the highest rock lies 3 m south-west of the trig point at 610 m.
