Birks is a grassy shoulder on St Sunday Crag's north-east ridge above Patterdale, with craggy slopes falling to Grisedale and steep grass to Deepdale. Its highest point is an unmarked grass mound, a little south-west of the cairn Wainwright took as the top. The name means a place where birch trees grow, and the summit looks down the lower reach of Ullswater.
