Birkhouse Moor is really a broad eastern arm of Helvellyn, and its highest point is a cairn by the wall that runs along the ridge towards Striding Edge. The view is dominated by Helvellyn itself, with Striding and Swirral Edges reaching out around Red Tarn. On its lower slopes lies Lanty's Tarn, named after a former landowner, Lancelot Dobson, and later used for ice, and its ice house still stands nearby.
