Hart Crag sits on the eastern arm of the Fairfield Horseshoe, and its summit is a brief rocky crest, cairned at both ends, with grass between the boulders. The highest rock is an outcrop near the western end, though a rock by the south-east cairn is just as high. To the north lies Link Cove, a hanging valley whose stream tumbles over waterfalls into Deepdale, and Wainwright treated its long north-east ridge, Hartsop above How, as a fell in its own right.
