Grey Knotts rises straight above Honister Pass, and its top is a cluster of grey rock knobs, two of them the same height, with small tarns and old fence posts in between. The name first belonged only to those summit rocks. On its Borrowdale side lay the old graphite mine at Seathwaite, worked from the 16th century and used for everything from marking sheep to making pencils until it closed in 1891. The summit looks over Buttermere and south to the Scafells.
