Fleetwith Pike rises in one steep edge from the lakeshore at Gatesgarth, and its summit overlooks the Buttermere valley with Crummock Water and Loweswater beyond. Its northern face, Honister Crag, has been quarried for green slate since the 1750s, with a break between 1986 and 1997. On the way up Fleetwith Edge you pass a small white cross put up by friends of Fanny Mercer, who was killed in an accident in 1887.
