On Midsummer's Day 1745, 26 people said they watched a ghostly army marching along the ridge of Souther Fell, yet no footprints were found next day. This quiet eastern outlier of Blencathra is almost ringed by the River Glenderamackin, and is joined to other high ground only at the col of Mousthwaite Comb. The top is a simple rocky high point, and to the east the view runs out unbroken to the Pennines.
