Carrock Fell is the rockiest of the Northern Fells, and its top is ringed by the low, tumbled walls of an Iron Age hill fort with a large cairn inside. The name is Brittonic and is thought to come from a word for rock. Tungsten was mined at Carrock Mine on its flanks until 1981, mostly in wartime. In 1857 Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins climbed it, and Collins sprained his ankle on the way down.
