Blencathra's name is thought to come from Cumbric words meaning 'summit of the seat', while its other name, Saddleback, describes the shape seen from the east. The highest point, Hallsfell Top, has a trig point set in a concrete ring right above the Hall's Fell ridge, and on the grassy saddle to the north there's a large cross laid out in white stones. In 2014 the Earl of Lonsdale put the mountain up for sale, but the sale was withdrawn two years later.
