Swirl How's name is obscure, though 'how' is thought to come from the Old Norse haugr, a hill or mound. A fine cairn built around a large rock stands on its stony top, close to the edge above Greenburn. On the ridge towards Great Carrs, a memorial cairn with a wooden cross and part of the undercarriage marks where a Royal Canadian Air Force Halifax bomber crashed during the Second World War, while to the east the stony Prison Band leads down towards Wetherlam.
