The summit Wainwright listed is Brown How, the western top of Whinlatter, where a large circular windshelter stands just west of the highest ground. Much of the fell is planted with conifers, and the name mixes Norse and Gaelic roots and is thought to mean something like 'the gorse-covered slope'. From Brown How the best views run north to the Solway Firth and the hills of Scotland.
