Hopegill Head is a small pointed top perched on the edge of Hobcarton Crag, a crumbly cliff about 130 m high. The crag, owned by the National Trust, is the only place in England where red alpine catchfly grows. The name simply means the head of Hope Gill, though locals often call it Hobcarton Pike, and on clear days you can see the Isle of Man and the Scottish Border hills.
