Cairn Bannoch's name is given as 'cake hill', from its Gaelic form Carn a' Bheannaich. It's a rounded swelling on the south-eastern edge of the White Mounth plateau, joined to Broad Cairn by a high col, with a cairn on the top. Nearby, the steep crags of Creag an Dubh Loch plunge to the Dubh Loch, in sharp contrast to the gentle summit.
