Càrn Dearg is the highest point of the Monadh Liath, the 'grey mountains', a huge, rarely visited spread of high moorland with almost no real ridges. This hill is different from most of the range: its slopes are rocky, and its eastern side drops steeply into Glen Ballach. North of the cairn the plateau rolls on for miles. Newtonmore and Kingussie, in the Spey valley, are the nearest villages.
