Maol Chean-dearg means 'red-headed brow', and the name fits: its dome-shaped top is a bare spread of red sandstone boulders, with a very large cairn. It lies between Upper Loch Torridon and Loch Carron, cut off from its neighbours by a low col, and the summit is often rated among the best viewpoints of any Munro, looking west to the Torridon hills and south-west to Beinn Bhan and the Skye Cuillin. Nearby, a standing stone called Clach nan Con-fionn is said to be where Fionn mac Cumhaill tied up his hunting dogs.
