Meall nan Tarmachan, 'hill of the ptarmigans', is the highest point of the Tarmachan ridge near Killin, just west of Ben Lawers. Its cairned top is an easy walk from the road north of the Lawers visitor centre, but the full ridge traverse needs some scrambling. A rare Neolithic stone axe workshop lies on Creag na Caillich at the end of the ridge, and iron rails and pylon remains still litter the south-east shoulder from a 1950s cableway that carried rock for the Lawers Dam.
