Within the Fforest Fawr section of the Brecon Beacons, Fan Gyhirych rises to 726.1 m, with the trig point towards the western side of its summit plateau and the highest ground about 50 m north of it. Its finest feature is the north-eastern cwm, which held a small glacier during the ice ages. The whole hill is open country, and most walkers use a vehicle track up the broad south ridge; on the lower western flanks ran the early nineteenth-century Brecon Forest Tramroad.
