On the Carmarthen Fans in the Black Mountain, Picws Du (749.1 m) sits on the edge of the escarpment above the glacial lake of Llyn y Fan Fach. A large Bronze Age round barrow, still unexcavated, crowns the summit. The high-level Beacons Way crosses the top, and a popular circuit links it with Waun Lefrith and Fan Foel; in clear weather the views run north to the Cambrian Mountains and south to Swansea and the Bristol Channel.
New to the Pennants?Read our guide: What Are The Welsh Pennants?Old Red Sandstone, with hard Pen y Fan Formation sandstones on the summit and southern slopes, and a deeply gullied apron of scree beneath the northern cliffs.
