According to Sir Ifor Williams, 'Glyder' comes from the Welsh 'gludair', a heap of stones, which suits a summit that is a large rock on a huge pile of rocks. At 994.3 m it is the second highest of the Glyderau and the sixth highest in Wales. Near the top stands Y Gwyliwr, the Cantilever, a big rock that looks precariously balanced, with the spiky outcrop of Castell y Gwynt to the west; Bristly Ridge gives a Grade 1 scramble up the north side.
