High Pike is the most northerly Lake District fell over 2,000 feet, looking out over the Solway Firth to the Scottish hills. The top has a big windshelter made from the stones of a ruined shepherd's cottage, a trig point, and a slate bench remembering Mick Lewis, who died in 1944 aged 16. The northern slopes were mined from the 16th century until 1966 for copper, lead and barytes, and the old workings at Roughtongill are said to have yielded 23 different ores.
