Knott stands in the middle of the Back o' Skiddaw, a remote moorland that was once a royal hunting forest, and it's the highest point in that area. Its top is a long, whale-backed grassy ridge with a cairn and only faint paths. The Harding vein beneath the fell was worked by Carrock Mine, the only mine outside Cornwall and Devon to produce tungsten ore.
