The name comes from the Old English cringol, meaning twisted or wrinkled, and that's just what the skyline looks like from Great Langdale: five rocky bumps in a row. The highest is Long Top, the second crinkle, and it's topped by a cairn, and heading north to south, many walkers are caught out by the Bad Step, a short, awkward drop that can be avoided, while Three Tarns sits in the gap below Bowfell.
