Hard Knott rises straight from the top of Hardknott Pass, and its summit knoll is crowned with a cairn. Below its western flank, on a spur above Eskdale, are the ruins of Mediobogdum, the Roman fort built in the 120s or 130s to guard the pass. From the top you look north to the Scafell massif, with Harter Fell filling the view to the south.
