At the head of Langdale, Bowfell rises to a rough pyramid of boulders, and the highest point is a rib of rock a few metres from the summit cairn. On its eastern side, the tilted Great Slab of Flat Crag has a spring at its foot whose water Wainwright rated above any other. Three Tarns, the col to the south, separates it from Crinkle Crags, and from the top every main group of Lakeland fells is in view, with Scafell Pike prominent across upper Eskdale.
