As its name suggests, Dale Head stands at the top of the Newlands valley, and its big cairn is perched right on the edge of the northern crags, looking straight down the dale to Skiddaw. Copper was mined below those crags, and on the southern flank the green slate of Honister has been quarried since at least 1728. Two small tarns, Dalehead Tarn and Launchy Tarn, lie on its gentler slopes.
