Robinson is named after a person, Richard Robinson, who bought estates around Buttermere centuries ago, and it was once known as Robinson's Fell. The broad top has its highest point on a bare rock, close to a cairn on the westerly of two outcrops. Its southern slope holds the Hackney Holes, now known to be the biggest rock-slope collapse in the Lake District, and on the west sits the marshy hollow of Buttermere Moss.
