Gray Crag is really the long, narrow northern ridge of Thornthwaite Crag, pushed out between Hayeswater and the valley of Pasture Beck. The top is a grassy strip with a few rocks, split by a wall, and both sides drop away in steep crags and gullies. It's easy to mix up with Grey Crag above Longsleddale, a different fell altogether. From the ridge there's a good view west to the Helvellyn range.
