From Stickle Tarn, Pavey Ark looks like a huge wall of rock, about 400 metres wide. The famous scramble of Jack's Rake climbs diagonally across it, following a natural groove marked by a few ash trees. Behind the cliff edge the ground is gentler, with small tarns, rocky outcrops and bilberry ledges, and the top itself is bare rock with a tiny cairn. Stickle Tarn, at the foot of the crag, has been dammed to hold more water.
