Ard Crags is a pointed little fell above the Newlands valley, with a narrow, airy ridge carpeted in heather. There's no cairn on the highest ground now, though Wainwright described one. The bigger fells of the Causey Pike ridge block much of the outlook, so the best view is straight down Newlands, with a glimpse of Scafell Pike through a gap to the south. The rocky nose at the end of the ridge is sometimes called Aikin Knott.
